Are you ready to take your next party up a notch? With an Alps skiing-themed party, you’ll be sure to impress with your décor, food, music, costumes and drinks – and might we suggest a murder mystery? (wink wink) Read on for our guide on how to throw an unforgettable Alps themed ski party.

Décor for Your Party

When it comes to décor for a skiing, alps or chalet themed party, there’s no shortage of ideas. You could hang ski-shaped decorations from the ceiling while playing Alpine music in the background. A well-placed set of skis (especially outside in the snow for people to discover as they arrive) can go a long way toward setting the scene – grab them from your local thrift store! Amazon has backdrops as well for a fantastic photo station, and who doesn’t love a good selfie-station at a themed party?

For added ambience, create a “snow-covered” food and/or drinks table with white tablecloths or fake snow/fluff (amazon again for the win) or hit up your local fabric or hobby store. Create beautiful centrepieces to accent your table with paper snowflakes (also a fun art project!) and pine cones in hurricane glasses, and evergreen branches. Bonus points for burning pine-scented candle to create the scent of the great outdoors!

Food & Beverages

Your guests will love traditional Alpine cuisine such as fondue served with bread cubes and vegetables or Raclette accompanied by potatoes and charcuterie platters. Depending on where you want to set your Alps party, French or Italian Alps cuisine is appropriate, but if you are going for a Bavarian or Austrian alps party, the cuisine from those regions may be more fitting. And, if you’re thinking Swiss Alps is more your jam, we recommend a stop at the Culinary Heritage of Switzerland’s website, which is a highly curated resource for traditional Swiss cuisine. If English is your only language, you’ll probably want to run this one through a browser translator but it’s worth it for the authentic food ideas. Anyone else’s stomach just growl?

For drinks, opt for hot beverages like mulled wine or hot cocoa topped with homemade marshmallows. The Southern Alps are a great wine producing region, so if you can get your hands on some wine from those regions, you’ll earn Host Bragging Rights. If you’re feeling creative, try making wintry cocktails like The Swiss Mule or The Black Forest Martini!

Music & Costumes

No Alps-themed party is complete without music! Create an upbeat playlist featuring popular Alpine tunes like “Edelweiss” and “The Sound of Music” theme song to get everyone singing along. If you don’t dig the idea of the hills being alive with the sound of music at your party, any genre will work. We are huge fans of eras, and for some reason, throwing Murder in the Alps as an 80s skiing themed party is really popular (that’s fluorescent yellow, pink and green ski gear). Sometimes, just switching up the decade from modern to a bygone era can help direct the music – and, as a beautiful segue, attire!

Encourage guests to dress up in their favorite ski outfits too (of the era of your choice)! Whether they choose something classic like chalet-style sweaters (I feel an ugly sweater contest on the horizon) or go all out with full skiing gear—the more festive the better!

Murder mystery party tip!

Get the package that fits your CONFIRMED guests, not the “maybes” and “on-the-fencers”. We live this hosting life, and know that not everyone can firm up an RSVP (and let’s face it, some are just flaky… yup, we are just dropping truth today…). The packages are designed to have everyone, even if they aren’t a suspect themselves, be fully involved with the mystery, so don’t worry about anyone feeling like they aren’t involved. Trust us – most times the Sleuths have more fun than the Suspects.

Try this Hosting Hack when planning your next party, and let us know how it goes!
