• You have kids at the party. As the child of parents who threw many parties with a serve-yourself bar (it was the 80s), we spent the entire party drawing action plans and performing mission impossible stunts in order to get the booze. And most of the time we succeeded. We were very cunning, just like most kids.

• You don't know everyone there really, really well. Yes, there are some groups of guests who can come and go from your house as though it's their own, and having you serve them their third/fourth/fifth drink would feel strange. Allowing them to help themselves to the bar would be natural, just as they would help themselves to a glass of water when they dropped in for a quick visit. If you're not sure, ask yourself: if each person stopped by outside of the party, would they feel they could help themselves to a drink from your fridge? If not, then a serve-yourself bar is just as inappropriate.

• There is anyone on your guest list that you are trying to impress. Honesty moment – we hosts love to impress people. We want our guests to think we are amazing hosts. Serving them, welcoming them and showing them our amazing hospitality is part of the fun of party hosting. You have the opportunity to impress them, so if there is anyone on the guest list that you want to impress, if for no other reason than to make a new friend, avoid the self-serve bar. Setting up a bar in this case is a missed opportunity to wow your guests.

• You don't feel comfortable taking your guests' keys. If you wouldn't be willing to pry a set of keys from a guest's hand, do NOT set up a self-serve bar. Ever. You are responsible for them, for their safety, and by allowing guests to serve themselves, you are accepting that you may be put in a situation where you have to be unpopular with the guest who insists they haven't had too much, but clearly have. You can provide them a safe ride home by setting yourself or a spouse or another non-drinking guest as the designated driver, but you must not let them drive after you have given them an open bar all night – no exceptions.

• You have a recovering alcoholic on your guest list. This is not a slight to them or their ability to control themselves, it's a decision made out of respect.

• You have a guest who doesn't know when to stop, when to leave or when to lay off. This is the friend that starts to embarrass themselves the minute they start to drink. They think they are the life of the party, but really, their actions are just hurting their reputation, and making other people uncomfortable. This is surely not the feeling you want your other guests to have while at your party, so it's best just to remove the temptation from that guest.
